We aren’t anti-visual, but do use the Blumenfeld ‘How to Tutor’ that warns against over-dependence upon visuals that hinder true literacy & reading fluency. These are fairly simple graphics & we find them to be useful, & not so dependence-forming as those picture-cue systems which trick parents & children into thinking they are reading well until around the third grade where content ramps up & the picture-cue thought process becomes a hindrance. Children need to see a letter, or common letter grouping, & think the sound with as few steps between as possible for truly fluent & efficient reading.
Useful for teaching letter formation & beginning phonics
